This series, started in 2021, is a continuation of my prior series “Off the Grid”.  The current work maintains my interest in the relationships between texture, pattern and spatial illusions, chaos and chance.  Influenced by the Surrealist’s automatic writing technique to generate random, abstract shapes used in unusual shape combinations, I am working with repeated compositions within the same painting.

However, whereas in my prior work I was concerned with patterned shapes and background, this new work investigates pattern within the composition itself. That is, I am using an identical set of shapes that are repeated in different positions throughout the entire painting.  In other words, I use the same “template” throughout to create different compositions.

This technique helps to organize the composition and opens up opportunities to further concentrate the viewer on pattern/texture and the floating three-dimensional shapes to create a rhythmic and visual pattern.
